12:45 Two day ferry/cruise from Trondheim to Tromsø

Hurtigruten offers ferry and car transport along with cruise services. Some of our fellow passengers were on a 12 day trip. We found it a quiet, relaxing, and a bit boring way to spend 2 days.

18:00 A lovely restaurant with a wonderful tasting menu.

Entering Smak, you’re seated in a lounge for a drink and a series of small snacks. It’s small; only about 20 patrons. The second part of meal is in the enjoining dinning room with an open kitchen. After a series of amazing dishes, mostly seafood focused, you finish back in the lounge for tea or coffee and a few final snacks. Great food and friendly attentive service.

Tromsø easy to use public bus system.

We decided to give public transit a try and we were incredibly impressed. After download the app, we were able to easily buy tickets (about $2 each), plan trips, and get real time notification about bus status. All of the buses we took ran every 15 minutes and continued running late in the evening (we caught one at 11:30 pm).

11:00 An eclectic museum including exhibits on the Sami people, Vikings, and the fauna of the region.

With no particular plans, we headed over to the museum. It was easy 15 minute ride on the bus (see our Svipper post). We got there early, so enjoyed a nice hike around the campus. While not exceptional, it was fun and interesting.

17:45 This Sami farm is a lovely way to spend an evening.

Ben got dressed as Santa so Jen could have photos with Santa and the reindeer. And then we saw the Northern Lights! The evening finished with learning about the Sami people, the reindeer, and hearing traditional Sami singing.

08:50 At a kennel 90 minutes outside of Tromsø, a chance to drive dogsleds

We met at the Tromsø bus station at 8:40 am and were driven out to the kennel in Tamokdalen. Bundled up in provided snowsuits, we went outside to get a brief lesson and then we were on our way. While our team of 5 very good dogs did most of the work, it was a surprising amount of exercise, especially using the break; these dogs love to run!

We started with the Amalienborg Palace & neighboring Amaliehaven park, getting lucky enough to see the changing of the guards. From there we went to Frederik's Church to the Kastellet, and finished at Den Lille Havfrue (the Little Mermaid.) A nice ~90 minute stroll.

18:00 One of the world's best restaurants. As much a modern art experience as a meal.

The final piece of our trip. Our expectations were high. We were still impressed. It was 6 hours long and we were never bored. Every course was stunning and a work of art. It's very clear why Rasmus Munk was just named best chef in the world.
